Berlin’s first snowfall 2012

Berlin’s first snowfall 2012

Parks
The flakes were big and fluffy.  So, I headed of to the Tiergarten with camera in hand. I really enjoyed the contrast created by the snow on the Bismarck Memorial.  The massive memorial in Berlin portrays Bismarck in his ceremonial garb as Chancellor standing above statues of: Atlas, showing Germany's world power status at the end of the 19th century; Siegfried, forging a sword to show Germany's strong industrial and military might; Germania pinning underfoot a panther, symbolizing the suppression of discord and rebellion; a sibyl reclining on a sphinx and reading the book of history. The Bismarck Memorial (German: Bismarck-Nationaldenkmal), located in the Tiergarten in Berlin, is a prominent memorial statue dedicated to Prince Otto von Bismarck, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Prussia and the first Chancellor of…

Hexenpark (The Witch’s Park)

Hexenpark (The Witch’s Park)

Activities for Children, Parks
Barbarossaplatz, Tempelhof-Schöneberg 10781 Berlin, Germany Probably our all time favorite place to play in Schöneberg.  This witch themed park has something for kids of all ages.  A cool witch's house, her broomstick parked outside and even her unmentionables hang on a line nearby.  The biggest challenge for me is the older kids in the park tend to run wild (because they are having such a great time), so you have to make sure your little one doesn't accidentally get run over or approaches one of the rides while in motion - there are spinning wheels and a giant rope swing thingy (which is pretty cool).  There are several sandbox like play spaces for toddlers along with plenty of places to explore - the witch's house, a pirate ship and a…

Heinrich von Kleist Park

Heinrich von Kleist Park

Parks
Recently, we visited the Heinrich von Kleist Park (map) in the north of the Berlin district of Schöneberg ( Tempelhof-Schöneberg ) between Potsdam and Elßholzstraße.  The space is perfect for an afternoon picnic or just enjoying the green space. Founded in 1670, it was the first and former botanical garden in Berlin, before the Botanical Garden Berlin was built in 1897. Heinrich von Kleist (October 18, 1777 - November 21, 1811) was a German playwright, prose writer, and journalist. The naming after Heinrich von Kleist was made in 1911 in commemoration of 100th Anniversary of  Kleist’s death.
